A view to the past

Trish Peterson, property manager at Washburn Towers Apartments, recently had a master key made to open the lockers in the old school building. The building used to house Ottawa High School and Middle School. At the time it was abandoned it was being used as Ottawa Junior High. In 2006 the building was repurposed as senior housing. The lockers on the first floor of the facility have been locked since the building was a school. A master key was recently made to open the old lockers. Here are some of the things they found.

Gettin’ High With the Ottawa Fire Department

Sometimes it pays to be a photographer. Today I had the opportunity to take a ride in the fire department’s new ladder truck. It was a really great experience. Here are some of the photos.

The Perfect Light

The word “Photographer” means painter of light. Sometimes light makes the best subject.

I was out on assignment yesterday looking for deer crossing signs. I didn’t find any signs but I did find the perfect light.

Enthusiasm at the Polls

I recently covered a mock election at a local elementary school. I was pleased to see the enthusiasm of the students casting their pretend votes. I couldn’t really tell if they were excited to cast their vote or just excited to be out of class. Either way, it was nice to see the kids getting excited and learning the voting process. Here are some of the photos.

One great thing about this blog is that I can showcase more photos than appear in print. Often, we have room for only one or two photos in the paper but I can show you more on this blog.

Hunting for Wild Art

Last week I needed a wild art feature for the paper. I never have any idea what I’m going to shoot so I usually just drive around. Today was no different. After an hour of driving around town I still had nothing. So I decided to fall back on an old photographer’s standby: Kids playing at the park. I was on the south end of Ottawa so I pulled into Kanza Park. I got out of my car and started walking. I didn’t see anyone at first. I was about to get back into my car when I had an idea. I heard the wind blowing through the leaves and a light bulb went off over my head. I finally had a plan. I wanted to capture the changing leaves without just shooting a picture of a tree. So I camped out under a low hanging branch and waited for someone to walk past. I felt a little like a hunter stalking his prey. When someone finally walked through my field of vision I framed them in the leaves and snapped away. Here are the results.
