“The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the the causes and prevention of disease”…..Thomas Edison
Reading a newspaper today, I saw an article about joining efforts for a community service feeding project which included a quote saying, “Here in the states we have hunger but we don’t have starvation.” The organization is trying to raise $30,000 to go towards the purchase of meals for hungry people in other countries.
What is starvation?
Starvation: a severe reduction in vitamin, nutrient and energy intake. It is the most extreme form of malnutrition. In humans, prolonged starvation can cause permanent organ damage and eventually death.
Please take note that starvation and malnutrition is not connected to the amount of “so called food” that is consumed but to the ability of the body to digest and process what is eaten. The body measures starvation in quality not quantity.
Dehydration: Water is a critical element of the body, and adequate hydration is a must to allow the body to function. Up to 75% of the body’s weight is made up of water. Most of the water is found within the cells of the body (intracellular space). The rest is found in what is referred to as the extracellular space, which consists of the blood vessels (intravascular space) and the spaces between cells (interstitial space).
Obesity rates in the United States are among the highest in the world with as of 2007, with 74.1% of the adults being overweight or obese. Historically, obesity primarily afflicted adults, but this has changed in the last 2 decades. The percentage of overweight or obese children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate with 1 out of 3 children now considered overweight or obese. Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese in adulthood and to develop obesity-related health problems.
From personal experience…since relocating to the Midwest, I am starving and overweight. I have gained over 25 pounds and I am always craving food. The availability of real fruits and vegetables is extremely limited here. In other words, I have had a severe reduction in vitamin, nutrient and energy intake.
Living on the West Coast and having the availability of real nutritious food and the ability to go to a fresh market for locally grown food at a reasonable price was something that I took for granted. Now I have to drive at least 30 miles and pay very high prices to get real nutritious food which was grown locally or even in this country.
There is an abundance of addictive chemical laden junk food here…McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Applebee’s, Dairy Queen, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Sirloin Stockade, Kentucky Fried Chicken to name a few. Soda Pop and diet cola are the new “water.”
There is a “farming” culture here…wheat, soybeans and corn. When I ask about growing “real” organic fruits and vegetables, I am told that farmers can’t afford to grow those things here.
So I am sending out the word…anyone who is looking to migrate…here is an opportunity to move into a “Starving Community” with the most potential of any area in the country. Come to Franklin County Kansas.
